The Edge of Sadness

The Edge of Sadness by Edwin O'Connor
646 pages
Fiction

Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction (1962). Another wonderful novel that mixes faith and good literature for #tbt.

Elegantly written and easy to read. In this moving novel, Father Hugh Kennedy, a recovering alcoholic, returns to his hometown of Boston. There he revisits his past and is drawn deeper into world of the Carmodys, a wealthy and sometimes scandalous local Irish family. Fr. Kennedy’s simple but steadfast faith is beautifully rendered as he faces struggle and renewal, friendship and longing, spiritual aridity and hope.

This character driven novel provides an interesting view into the life of a priest, bound in service to those around him and yet also isolated.

I cried at the end.
