2nd Grade Reading
One of the great services of our local parochial school is
the summer reading list that they create and distribute for each grade level. My
incoming second grader became a reading addict over the summer and tore through her
list! They were good, solid books that educate as well as entertain. Many were
works of classic children’s literature.
In the wider culture, I see many books targeted at children
that contain… how shall I put it?… muck.
They are used for social engineering of modern ‘values’ or are basically
literary junk food with little merit. There is a push to get children to read
but little judgment encouraged regarding what
they read. The bar is set low and anything read is celebrated. This is
problematic.
As parents, we know that we need to be cautious about what enters
our children’s world. We vigilantly watch their physical environments. We need
to be equally vigilant about what enters their intellectual world through
books, tv shows and other forms of entertainment. Their individual consciences
as well as their concepts of the world are still being formed - or deformed -
based on these experiences.
All this is
to say:
Reading is
incredibly beneficial for children,
if they are reading quality literature.
Where do you
find quality books? Here are some suggestions for parents of incoming 2nd
Graders. This is a list of books that my daughter enjoyed this summer. They
entertain as well as teach life lessons, morals, vocabulary and more. I highly
recommend them to fellow parents!
