A Christmas Carol

 A Christmas Carol
124 pages
Fiction – Classic Literature
by Charles Dickens

This short classic novel has brought me great joy over the last couple days! Originally published in 1843, it takes the reader on a vast journey in just a few pages. The beauty of the well-crafted language made my soul rejoice beyond all bounds with Scrooge. In the end, my heart was effectively softened.

It was surprisingly easy to read for such an old novel. The narrator addresses the reader directly with a casual tone and interesting turns of phrase. There was a humorous tone at times and an effective dream-like quality at others. I can not understate how pleasurable it was to read a bite-sized amount of high quality writing. It wholly transported me into another world.

Everyone knows this tale and yet God is in the details. Re-reading the original story is like walking directly in Dicken’s footprints. The reader encounters surprising and real emotions along the way. For a story famously about a miser, I was surprised by the love and goodness that radiated from numerous characters in this book. And I was gratified to see Scrooge lap up that love like a child dying of thirst.

This book is accessible Dickens - worth reading at any time - but especially during the Christmas season. The Christmas season runs until the Epiphany on January 6th. You still have time!

RECOMMENDED FOR: Adults seeking a small but effective dose of high quality literature. Readers seeking to indulge in the Christmas season, escape their current reality or soften their own hearts.
