Ordinary Extraordinary Jane Austen

Ordinary Extraordinary Jane Austen
by Deborah Hopkinson (Author) & Qin Leng (Illustrator)
40 pages
Biography - Children’s Literature (Picture Book)

We recently started reading biography picture books to the girls. I love that they are substantive and meaningful, rather than just fluffy nonsense books.

This wonderful picture book is a gentle introduction for children (ages 4 - 8) to Jane Austen. I loved that this book showed Jane enjoying a rich family life with her large family - listening to recitations, playing games, dancing, staging plays, writing letters and, above all, reading. What great ideas to plant in children's minds!

I also loved that this book showed Mr. Austen encouraging Jane to write, giving her a special writing box and then trying to get her novels published. I did not love that it seemed to smile at Jane observing and making fun of others.

RECOMMENDED FOR: This is a great book for children ages 4 - 8, especially for children of Austen fans. This book would be a great gift for the budding young reader or writer in your life.
