Drinking with St. Nick

Drinking with Saint Nick: Christmas Cocktails for Sinners and Saints
by Michael P. Foley
224 pages
NonFiction - Theology & Cocktail Recipes

This charming little book is a great stocking stuffer - or gift to yourself! It invites the reader to drink like a saint and be drawn into the Christmas season. The preface reminds us that drinking like a saint means: with moderation, with gratitude, with memory, with merriment and with ritual.

The book sections categorize the holiday season in different ways, but each offers a daily infusion of catholic history and teaching as well as related drink suggestions. There are many ways to use this book!

  • The first and largest section (Advent Calendar) is a 'wet advent calendar' covering December 1 - 24th. Each day has information on a catholic saint and drink suggestions inspired by that saint.

  • The second section (Golden Nights) covers the special days of December 17-23rd from a different angle. Here each day explores a Christmas hymn and suggests drinks inspired by the songs.

  • The third section (The Twelve Days of Christmas) covers December 25 - January 5th. Catholics don't stop celebrating Christmas after Christmas Day! Each day in this section features either a saint or information on the importance of that liturgical day along with inspired drinks.

  • The fourth section (The Twelve Days of Christmas Song) recovers December 25 - January 5th with information and drinks relating to the Twelve Days of Christmas song.

  • The fifth, final and smallest section (Epiphany & The Time Thereafter) covers January 6th to February 2nd. This short section just has entries for the few feast days that occur within the date range. Each day has information about that day's feast and suggested drinks.

RECOMMENDED FOR: Catholics who want to learn more about their faith AND Catholics who like a good cocktail! This is a great way to learn about your faith and enjoy the merriment of the season.

  1. If you need a great recipe for wassail (virgin but could be doctored), my mom has the best. It may be in the old CGM or SHS cookbook if you have access to either of those. They key is getting good dark sweet cider not the apple juice you so often find on the shelves labeled as cider.

  2. I think I do have an old CGM cookbook! I will have to check it out. Our girls love wassail and we make it periodically throughout the winter. :-)
