Something Other than God

Something Other than God:
How I Passionately Sought Happiness and Accidentally Found It
by Jennifer Fulwiler
256 pages
NonFiction - Memoir

This is Fulwiler's first book which contains her conversion story from atheist to Roman Catholic. Who doesn't love a good conversion story?!

I loved this book by the end, but it had a rough start. She seemed to be the epitome of a too-cool-for-school atheist with snarky, dismissive comments for anyone who dared to think differently than her. It was interesting and insightful to hear her perspectives on Christians and faith as she evolved through her conversion process. It was decidedly offensive, but also interesting in a way. I never would have imagined people think that way!

Ultimately though, the author comes to a deep understanding of Christ and the Catholic Church. Her conversion story is sweet because it is hard-fought and the reader is finally rewarded in the end. She defies stereotypes of uneducated, non-thinking Christians. Stereotypes that she herself believed and used as the butt of jokes at the beginning of the story.

This book had a lot about her atheist views and the slow process of starting to consider religion. My one complaint is that it has a lot of the “before” and only bits of the “after”. However, it does show a lot of good reasons for believing and being part of the Catholic Church.

RECOMMENDED FOR: People seeking to understand atheists. People who love conversion stories! People seeking an interesting memoir.
