A Little Princess

A Little Princess
by Frances Hodgson Burnett
266 pages
Fiction - Children's Literature

Originally published in 1905. Sarah Crewe is sent to England to attend Miss Minchin's boarding school for girls by her adoring and wealthy father. Her time there starts wonderfully as she is treated like a princess. However, when her father passes away leaving her orphaned, Miss Minchin treats her harshly and makes her work as a servant. Sarah survives by using her imagination until fortune smiles on her again.

The language was surprisingly easy to read for such an old book. I read the entire book in a single day. The first 60 pages had an addictively sweet and nostalgic feel. It was hard to put down! Then the story dragged a bit in places but was still enjoyable overall.

Sarah's 7 year old age is perfect for my almost-7 year old daughter to enjoy! Good manners and imagination are prized in this story.

Note: The last 3 pages of chapter 10 (The Indian Gentleman) contain some unfortunate comments about a Buddha shrine and how heathens are more 'romantic' and interesting than ordinary church goers. As these pages aren't necessary to the overall story, I would recommend just skipping them when reading the story to impressionable children.

RECOMMENDED FOR: Young girls ages 7 and up (read by their parents). Independent readers ages 9 - 12. And nostalgic adults seeking good literature!
